Paint & Lettering: During the McGinnis era in 1956, the new CEO’s black block letter N over white block letter scheme on an orange car began to appear. And finally the ICC required the NH to move the data to the far right so to be seen while the door was open - a problem the NH was slow to enact so that most cars
remained as seen on this page into the 1960’s.

The New Haven’s lettering and paint schemes became complicated over the years. An excellent source of this information may be found in David Sweetland
and Stephen Horsley’s comprehensive volume NH Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment, published by Morning Sun Books (1995)
