Built in December 1941 and early 1942, Pullman-Standard delivered 500, fifty-foot double-door autocars to the Santa Fe under Lot number 5676. Series 10000-10499. The first 200 cars (10000-10199) were assigned to high-speed passenger express service and fitted with steam and signal lines, and Allied Full-Cushion high speed trucks. Cars were painted olive green with Dulux Gold stenciling with black roofs and underbodies coated with black car cement. 50’ cars employed the wider map series scheme. Maps were stenciled on the right side and slogans on the left. In 1943, an additional 100 cars, selected from Series 10200-10299) were fitted for high speed passenger express service. Initially these last 100 cars retained their mineral brown paint with white lettering and slogans as did the remaining Series 10300-10499. However these first 300 were soon renumbered into 4100-4399 Series, and shortly thereafter repainted in coach green and lettered in DULUX gold as express cars dedicated to passenger service. Maps and slogans were dropped as too difficult to maintain as a result of constant washing, and replaced with a simple 5” gold lettering EXPRESS. It was common to see these distinctive cars at the head-end position in almost all Santa Fe’s name trains across the country up to the 1960’s.

Paint & Lettering: Car bodies and truck sideframes were painted ATSF passenger car green: TCP-255. Underbodies coated with black car cement. Roofs black with slate granuals sprinkled on while still drying to provide traction. Lettering was all DULUX gold. Slogans for Series 10000-10299 lasted until mid to late 1943, when the simple EXPRESS was used on both sides. After 1958, the modified thicker cross was applied. This green EXPRESS scheme lasted into Amtrak days with two cars into 1980.
