lettering set for DL&W’s all steel 1923 USRA design 8’-7” IH boxcars

Between November 1929 and February 1930, the DL&W took delivery of 1000 USRA design all-steel boxcars with an inside height of 8’-7”:
 
Series 47000-47699, 700 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 998, delivered Nov 1929/Jan 1930
Series 47700-47999, 300 cars, Magor Car Company, Lot P-7072, delivered Jan/February 1930
 
Note: cars were delivered with Youngstown steeel corregated doors, but in 1940, as many cars were shopped and AB brakes added, the doors were
replaced with 5-Panel Superior welded-steel doors, and many roofs were changed from Hutchins Dry Lading to Murphy Straight Panel roofs.
 
Paint & Lettering: As delivered cars were painted with DL&W’s freight car brown. Lettering was all white stencil paste with 9” road name on the right upper side.
Repaints beginning in 1942, saw the PHOEBE SNOW slogan added and the road name in san-serif lettering. In 1955 many of these cars wered repainted a
second time and received the large” “Billboard” road name stenciled and moved to the left side.
