Alton Railroad lettering for the 1937 AAR Modified boxcar as delivered

Between April and May 1945, the Alton took delivery of 700 box cars of the Modified 1937 AAR design. One hundred from Pullman-Standard, Lot #5793, and assigned road numbers 52400-52499, and 600 from AC&F, Lot #2751, and assigned road numbers 52500-53099. In 1947 all these cars went to parent GM&O and repainted with GM&O markings while retaining the same road numbers. Cars were painted red-brown (1 part Floquil #88 and 1 part Floquil 175) underbody and truck side frames painted black car cement. Wheels were unpainted and allowed to rust and gather a coating of axle grease. A good representation of this patina is to paint the wheels and axles with a 50% mixture of Floquil Grimey Black and 50% Floquil Zinc Chromate Primer.
