The Northwestern Refrigerator Line was formed in 1924 as a separate company from the C&NW railroad, even though many board members sat on both boards. Between 1924 and 1930, the line acquired over 3,000 used wood refrigerator cars originally built by ACF for other owners. Later it began supplementing it's fleet with new wood reefers built by ACF. In 1946 NWX was purchased by North American Car Company, although the cars retained the same reporting marks. The initial paint scheme as depicted on the cars above were painted a light grey with a red oxide kick board under the doors, red oxide roof and ends. Underbody and truck side frames coated with black car cement. (In 1952, the better known yellow and green band color scheme was adopted.) Lettering and artwork designed and created at Protocraft Decals.

Background color shown above is not included in decal sheet
