Although not a Bx-34, the photo correctly depicts the placement of the slogan Richard Hendrickson collection

The Bx-34 class consisted of 1,801 cars built by Pullman Standard in early 1940 and numbered 139500-141300. They were essentially AAR alternate standard 40'6" steel box cars with 10'4" interior height, 5-5 Dreadnaught ends, and Youngstown corrugated doors, except that they had Duryea cushion underframes instead of AAR underframes. 1251 cars (139500-140749 and 141300) had ASF self-aligning spring-plankless trucks; 550 cars (140750-141299) had National B-1 trucks.

When new they were painted mineral brown with black underframes and trucks and a gritty black anti-slip coating on the roofs (but not the wood running boards, which were mineral brown). The .rst Santa Fe steel box cars with map-and-slogan stenciling, they were delivered with curved line maps on the right side and one of .ve advertising slogans on the left side. Slogan assignments were 139500-139859, Grand Canyon Line; 139860-140219, Scout; 140220-140579, El Capitan; 140580-140939, Super Chief; and 140940-141300, Chief. Repainted cars were entirely mineral brown, including trucks and underframes, except that the practice of applying anti-slip compound to the steel roofs continued. Through the mid-1950s, this coating was black, but later it was mineral brown. Some cars were repainted before mid-1947, when the slogans remained the same but the later straight line maps were used. Most Bx-34s were repainted during the period between mid-1947 and 1959, when maps were replaced by "Ship and Travel..." slogans, the Scout slogan was dropped, and the other four slogans were revised. Beginning in 1959, repainted cars received giant herald stenciling, which was the same on both sides of the cars.

Most Bx-34s remained in revenue service through the 1950s and '60s, with a few surviving as late as the mid-1970’s. Richard Hendrickson
