The S.P. inaugurated LCL overnight service in October 1935, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. By 1936, the cars were repainted black with orange trim. After WWII, a new Overnight scheme was implemented on new B-5-24 boxcars assigned speci.cally for LCL service. This new paint scheme was applied to the .eet of the B-50-15 and 16 in 1948 to .ll the need for more cars.

The B-50-15 and B-50-16 Class of about 4,000 cars, which this decal sheet is concerned with, were built between 1925 and 1928, and used in general service. In 1948, when the LCL (Less than a Car Load) service was inaugurated, many of these cars were rebuilt with steel sides, repainted and given new numbers. They were selected from vacated numbers of wrecked or set out cars, (so numbering is not consistent) and placed in Overnight Service and received this distinctive scheme, as seen on these cars . Later many of these cars, when assigned other than Overnight service, were repainted in freight car red and renumbered once more. In 1956 over 3,500 were still in revenue service.

For a more thorough understanding of the S.P.’s Over Night service, refer to Tony Thompson’s excellent and comprehensive volumes on S.P. freight cars, Vol 4, Chapter 12. For these speci.c cars see Chapter 10, page 239. Lettering and artwork created at Protocraft Decals.
