The Birmingham Southern, based in Alabama, was owned by US Steel, (a Carnegie road which also owned Hannibal Connecting and Northampton & Bath)  The B.S. shipped steel products primarily to Chicago and St. Louis, but were occasionally to be found in the Northeast and even as far west as San Francisco.

The BS received 100 steel boxcars from Pullman-Standard in 1937 under Lot 5541 of this very distinctive car which was characterized as a “lightweight car”.  These were assigned road numbers as Series 300-399, and incorporated many of Pullman’s proprietary components such as the riveted flat panel roof, Pullman patented all welded 6’ doors and the flat panel riveted ends.  In 1950, many of these cars were rebuilt with Youngstown doors and a newer style lettering and medallion was applied.  Protocraft Decal sheet BS-3 incorporates both schemes. All-brass Bettendorf 50-ton trucks come with ball bearings, working journal covers and steel sintered rib-back wheels.

Only 25 models built.

Please specify either O scale or Proto:48 with your order.
