Lettering for Wabash’s 50’ Autocars with End Doors

In February 1942, the Wabash received 150, 50’ double-door automobile cars. The first 25 cars were built with end doors and assigned road numbers as Series 18000-18024. The remaining 125 cars were built without end doors and were assigned road numbers as Series 19000-19124. Except for end doors all cars were identical.

Body, roof, trucks and underframe all painted Wabash #10 Freight Car Red, a rich red oxide. Lettering all white stencil paste. From 1941 through 1957, reporting marks were 9” and numbers 7” tall. Beginning in 1957, reporting mark car numbers went to 9” tall and were given a 3” spacing between second and third number (see 18005 below and 19047 over) White flag emblem was added in March of 1955. In 1952, automobile service was mostly discontinued and cars were dedicated to auto parts service as denoted with the white 3’ bar and ball door stencil
