lettering for RF&P’s PS-1 1952 boxcars

The Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad was established in February 1834. With 113 miles of track the railroad linked Washington D.C. with Richmond, Virginia, but with this strategic location it connected all the Class 1 roads such as the C&O, B&O, Southern, Pennsylvania, Seaboard and Atlantic Coast Line into Washington, D.C. and was a vital link to the Capital. In 1919, the RF&P acquired 350 USRA single-sheathed boxcars from AC&F and 150 with subsidiary Washington Southern. By 1952, there were just 17 USRA boxcars in remining in service, so in December, 1952, the RFP received 100 P S-1’s from Pullman-Standard under Lot 8042. These were assigned road numbers as Series 2801-2900.

Paint & Lettering: Cars were painted in RFP’s freight car brown with lettering in all white stencil paste. When delivered the reporting marks were in 9” san-serif lettering. Subsequent repaints usually were lettered with the older Roman lettering, likely because that was the stencil cards available in the paint shop.
