lettering for C&EI’s 1948 50 and 1954 70-ton flatcars

Part Number: C&EI Flatcar-1

Price: $8.50

In December 1948, the C&EI took delivery of 25, 53’-6” flatcars with a 70-ton capacity, from American Car & Foundry’s Madison plant, under Lot 3292. Lot 3292 was a Southern Pacific design (F-70-6) and not an AAR design. The SP received 400 cars in this Lot and the C&EI piggybacked their order for 25 additional flatcars. Series was 42000-42024. Although a design for a 70-ton capacity, these C&EI cars ran on 50-ton spring plank trucks with a 5’-6“ w.b. AAR designation was FM. Twenty-two of these cars were fitted for TOFC trailer loading and designated as Class FC.

In April of 1953, the C&EI took delivery of 50, 70-ton AAR 53’-6” at cars. This group of cars were built by Eastern Illinois Equipment Co. of Danville, IL, under an order from Chicago Heights Transfer Terminal Co. as owner/lessor to the C&EI. Series was 42056-42105. Cars ran on 70-ton A-3 Ride Control trucks with a 5’-8” w.b. Thirteen cars were later equipped for TOFC service. Designation within this group was FM, FC and FMS.
