lettering for Santa Fe’s 50’ wood sheathed autocars

Part Number: ATSF Fe-S

Price: $8.50

In 1928, General American Transportation Co., delivered 500 double-sheathed 50’ auto boxcars to the Santa Fe as Series 65701-66200. Closely resembling the design proposed by the ARA Construction Committee, the Fe-S was essentially an enlarged version of the Bx-9. In the late 1930’s, twenty cars were renumbered into 6025-6044 series and equipped for automobile engine loading. The cars employed Climax-Cleveland Radial roofs and recessed Dreadnaught ends, with a horizontal steel sheathing retention band at about 1/3 the height of the side. Underframe was the standard ARA boxcar underframe used in all Bx cars.

Paint: Cars and truck side frames were painted ATSF Brown: TCP-251. Roof, underbody, brake detail coated with black car cement. Often times the roof paint had slate granules sprinkled on while still drying to provide traction. The running boards were usually not painted.
