lettering set for Swift 37’ meat reefers - 1948 red car scheme

Between 1875 and 1930, Swift & Co. maintained a eet of over 5,000 wood reefers, beginning with truss-rod Series numbers 1000. In 1931,

Swift sold it’s eet to General American Transportation Co, and then leased them all back without any change in reporting marks or numbers.

While the 5800-6099 series were 36’-9”, the majority of the cars were 37’-2”, with some at 37‘-5”overall, up to Series 6999. Series 7000-7999 was

the beginning of the 40’ cars, and then later back to 36‘ cars. These were brine cars and hence did not require as much interior space as an ice

car. This lettering set is primarily concerned with the 37’ wood cars of the 2500-5799 series.
 

Paint & Lettering: (repaint from 1931 - starting in 1948) Car sides, roof and ends were painted red with a white fascia board under the roof

overhang. Underframe coated with black car cement.
