Lettering for Union Pacific Modified 1937 AAR boxcars
Between April, 1941 and June, 1943, the UP built 2,748 Modified 1937 AAR design box cars in their Omaha shops. The first 2000 cars were Class B-50-32. Road numbers assigned to this series were 191000-192999. The second series, Class B-50-33, were assigned road numbers 193000-193748. . As painted in 1947, the reporting marks had horizontal lines above them, by the 1955 repaint scheme depicted above, the lines were no longer being applied. As of November 1949, the “Serves All The West” was replaced with the “Be Specific - ” on the left side - and “Road of the Steamliners” continued on the right side until 1953, when “Be Specific - ” replaced it also.“Route of the Streamliners” was always on the right side. In 1951, the spacing between “Be Specific” and “ship Union Pacific” was increased to 18”. The modeler should refer to Terry Metcalf’s “UP Freight Cars:1936-51 to more fully understand the UP’s many lettering variations. Cars were painted UP red-oxide including truck side frames. Underbody was coated with black car cement. Wheels were unpainted and allowed to rust and gather a coating of axle grease and road grime.
