The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway was formed in 1884 by combining a number of railroads that served industries in the Hammon and East Chicago area. Purchased in 1901 by U.S. Steel, the road expanded with more acquisitions, and by 1970, operated over 205 miles of track skirting Chicago with connections to all the Class 1 roads entering into Chicago proper.
In August of 1919, the EJ&E received 500 Class USRA double-sheathed 40-ton boxcars from AC&F under Lot 8572, and assigned road numbers as Series 7300-7799. In 1936/1937, 450 of these cars remaining in service were rebuilt with steel sides and Murphy Riveted all-steel roofs (this resulted in an increased inside height from 9’-0” to 9’-2”). AB brakes with Miner power hand brake assemblies replaced the KC brake systems and an AB valve protection steel plate was installed under the door.
Paint & Lettering: Between 1945 and 1949, cars were painted freight car brown with a black rectangle white lettered medallion - (see #7482 over). After 1950 cars were painted a deep green, with lettering and route map in orange stencilling.
