Santa Fe Class Bx-27 with Duryea u/f

Protocraft’s all-brass model of the Santa Fe’s Class Bx-27 with the Duryea underframe is a unique model. This car was the Santa Fe’s entry into the 1937

AAR design utilizing the new Duryea underframe, before moving to the higher Modied 10’-6” IH design. Never before done in O Scale, these exquisite and highly

detailed models are built by Boo Rim Precision of Korea, adhering accurately to the actual drawings supplied to American Car & Foundry under Lot 1607 in April, 1937. The Duryea underframe was a shock absorbing design, a spring assembly that ran almost the entire lenght of the center sill with 7“ of travel at each end., tried by many other railroads as well at the time, but not wholly successful. Trucks roll on hard steel sintered rib-back wheels with ball-bearings and have working journal covers.

 

The Santa Fe received 2,000 Type Bx-27 boxcars; the rst 500 cars were built by American Car & Foundry under Lot 1607, delivered in April 1937, and assigned road numbers as Series 138000-138499. The remaining 1,500 were built by Pullman-Standard under Lot 5547, and assigned road numbers as Series 136500-137999. These were delivered in June 1937.

 

The Santa Fe specied the standard 1937 AAR design all-steel boxcars with 10’-0” inside height, but ordered the cars with the new Duryea underframe (Cushion

Gear) patented by the O. C. Duryea Corp of New York. Prefabricated square corner 4/5 Dreadnaught ends manufactured by Standard Railway Equipment Co., and

Chicago-Hutchins (Murphy) raised panel steel roofs, wood running boards, 7-rung Wine ladders, Ajax power hand brake and 6’ Youngstown 3-section doors with

Camel door rollers and locking devices, made up the equipment listing.

 

Paint & Lettering: These cars were painted with ATSF Brown. Truck side frames, underbody and brake equipment were coated with black car cement. Lettering was all white stencil paste - monogram white with black center.
