lettering for GN’s 25’ wood cabooses - 1953/57 with slanted slogans

The GN had 420, 25’ wood cabooses. The earliest group was built or rebuilt between 1925 and 1935, at the road’s St. Cloud, Minnesota shops. Series
were X330 through X749.
 
Paint & Lettering: Cabooses were painted vermillion red (lighter than caboose red) with yellow lettering and a goat herald that contained yellow
circles. X438 above, with it’s side facing goat (1947-53) front-facing early goat herald with yellow circles and RAILWAY. X730 below, a repaint with
reector dots on the side, had it’s roof coated with aluminum paint. By now all had the (1947-1953) RAILWAY herald, end stripes and the goat herald
added to a plate on the end railing. By the mid-1950’s, 5” slanted safety slogans along the lower side, and 7-1/2” reporting marks on the cupola. There
were 10 dierent slogans, initially with straight letters. When the slanted numbers were used, the name GREAT NORTHERN was dropped.
A specic sloagn was assigned to a caboose depending with the last digit of the caboose’s road number: 0-9. (see chart on back side)
