lettering set for Pacific Great Eastern’s 36’ wood refrigerator cars

Part Number: PGE Reefer-1

Price: $8.50

In 1914, the PGE received the rst three of it’s wood refrigerator cars - 36’ cars, built new by National Steel Car Company of Hamilton, Ontario, and numbered as Series 801-803. In October 1939, the PGE acquired 3 additional, used, 36’ reefers of the truss-rod design, and numbered into 804-806 Series (note: #805 was destroyed in either1945 or 1947, reducing the ‘fleet’ to 5 cars.)

Paint & Lettering: Car sides were painted yellow with mineral red ends, roof and fascia. Cars were lettered in all black sans-serif block letters - 9” for the road name and 7” for reporting numbers and “REFRIGERATOR”, after 1945, most likely coinciding with the addtional 3 car acquisition, the new red, blue and black diamond logo was added.

Decal set designed and created at Protocraft Decals
Printed by Microscale Industries

Note: In 1946, the PGE acquired 20 former NRC 40’ wood refrigerator cars built in 1924. Series were numbered as 808-827 (807 not used for some reason). The PGE went to the new black moose head logo on aluminum-gray color sides and ends with black tar roofs and black car cement underbodies; the colorful diamond was not continued as the cars became quite dirty with snow and slush with constant use. (See decal set PGE Reefer-2 for this later scheme)
