Previous Return to list of all Refrigerator Car Decals in 1:48 scale Next lettering for Illinois Central’s CENTRAL DESPATCH wood refrigerator cars
Two thirds of all bananas consumed in the US were supplied by the United Fruit Co and Standard Fruit & Steamship Line from Central America to the port of New Orleans. Central Fruit Despatch was the refrigerator car company division of the Illinois Central Railroad, and was the prime mover of bananas and other perishable fruits from the ports of New Orleans all the way to Minnesota via Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska. In 1917, the I.C. took delivery of 500, 40’ wood refrigerator cars from Haskell & Barker’s Michigan City plant, under Lot 5147. Series was 59001-59500. In January of 1918, another order of 500 cars were received from Haskell & Barker under Lot 5164 and assigned road numbers as Series 59501-60000. Between 1935 and 1938, the 583 remaining wood refrigerator cars were rebuilt with AB brakes and all placed into a group numbered 52000-52666. (in 1937 a new fleet of all steel refrigerator cars began replacing the older wooden cars - see IC Reefer-2a and 2b decal sets) Decal set designed and created at Protocraft Decals Background color shown above is not included in decal sheet |
