Lackawanna’s 1937 AAR boxcars lettering set for as-delivered in 1940

In February and March of 1940, the DL&W received 500 all-steel boxcars of the new 1937 AAR design with an 10’-0” inside height from the Magor Car Company

as Lot P9450. These were assigned Series numbers 49000-49499. In July 1941, 3 additional cars were received from Magor under Lot P9677 and assigned Series

49500-49502. The cars came with 4/5 DN ends, featured the new round (W) corner construction, Ajax powered handbrake assemblies, wood running boards and

7/7 Wine ladders and roping staples. When delivered the A/B valve was protected with a valve shield plate on the left side.
 

Paint & Lettering: Cars were painted with DL&H freight car brown. Underframe coated with black car cement. Lettering, when delivered, had the road name

spelled out on the right side in all white stencil paste. In 1955, repaints of this Lot skipped the combination of road name and Route of the Phoebe Snow together

on the right side (see decal set DL&W-3b for Series 51000), and instead received the large 18” sans-serif block lettered name above the reporting marks on the left

while Route of the Phoebe Snow was only on the right (see DL&W-3b).
